New Golf Course Design

The development of a new golf course requires careful site selection, creative course layout and planning, formalizing the Client's goals and objectives while laying the ground work for sensitive field design and construction. It is essential that the Golf Course Architect and the consultants examine various types of site information to aid the Owner(s) with developing initial schematic alternatives based on program needs.

The planning process starts with walking the property under consideration for the development of the course with any available mapping in hand. During site investigation any potential opportunities and constraints are noted in the field. Once the initial visit and assessment is made, the route planning process can begin.

  • Mr. A. John Harvey, ASGCA and Matt Condon of RBA's Golf Course Design Department are currently working on course renovations at Great Gorge Country Club in McAfee, New Jersey. The 27-hole golf course was originally designed by George Fazio and opened in 1970. The project involves redesigning several holes on the Quarry Course and the practice putting green, due to installation of a new gas pipeline which crosses the course.

  • Other on-going design projects include Upper Montclair Country Club, located in Clifton, New Jersey. This private, 27-hole gem, originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast in the 1920's with major revisions by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., ASGCA, in the mid 1950's will undergo bunker renovations along with the installation of a new irrigation system and drainage.
